How many legs does a millipede have? The simple answer is millipedes have two legs on each body segment apart from the first three legs.

The millipede is brownish in color and ranges from 1-1.5 inches in length. Like others in its class, millipedes are nocturnal and hide during the day beneath various objects and are attracted to damp soil.

Additionally there are around 1,000 species of millipede in the United States alone.

Does a millipede bite?

Most species of millipede omit a foul smelling fluid which is toxic to insects and smaller animals and this fluid can cause blisters to human skin.

Why do I have millipedes?

Occasionally they find their way into the home, but very often die due to lack of moisture and outdoor food.

What can I do in the future to prevent millipedes?

  • Remove any moist harborage areas such as rotten wood, grass cuttings, compost and other decaying organic matter.
  • Store firewood off the ground.
  • Lawns should be dethatched, mowed and edged in order to promote drying.
  • Ensure the lawn is watered in the morning to promote any drying during the afternoon.
  • Don’t use excessive amounts of mulch in flower beds.
  • Seal and caulk gaps around windows, doors, pipes, siding.

Can I remove millipedes myself?

Over the counter products aren’t very effective when dealing with millipedes and other pests. Which is why we don’t recommend using them. Not only can they be hazardous if mixed incorrectly but they can affect pets, humans and plant life.
