Stinging Insects Removal for Virginia & North Carolina
Bees, wasps and hornets are beneficial insects as long as us humans make it a point to disregard them. Which isn’t always possible especially when their nests are built in close proximity to our homes, or even inside our homes.
Bee stings as well as wasp and hornet stings can be a painful experience, the consequence for a few individuals can be much more serious resulting in severe reaction of anaphylactic shock or even death in extreme circumstances. There are more than 500,000 stinging cases which are admitted to the emergency room a year.
Bumble Bees
Bumble bees are a beneficial insect as they pollinate crops and plants. Bumble bees can be found nesting in the ground but also in attics, soffits, around decks and patio areas. They create a loud buzz if their nest is disturbed and will defend it very aggressively. Bumble bees will chase the threat away from the nest and the sting of the bumble bee is very painful. They can also sting repeatedly.
Bumble bees are around an inch in length, oval in shape and are black with a yellow stripe in color.
Honey Bees
Honey bees are another beneficial insect as they pollinate many crops and plants. Honey bees produce honey from the pollen and nectar of the plants and crops they pollinate. The honey is stored in honeycomb in their nests which are usually found in tree crevices but they are also know to build nests in hollow walls, attics or chimneys. Honey bees do sting and the sting is painful if the stinger is not removed, but they only sting once.
Honey bees are mainly yellow with brown stripes oval in shape and around a 1/2 inch length.
Carpenter Bees
Carpenter bees are a solitary insect. The female carpenter bee will bore through wood to make a nest and lay her eggs, whilst the male carpenter bee will stand guard outside the nest. They prefer bare wood and are often found around the porch, wooden siding, window sills or shed ceilings. They prefer wood which is around two inches in thickness. You may notice sawdust piles near round wood tunnels.
Carpenter bees bare a resemblance to bumble bees but they don’t have a yellow stripe and around an inch in length. The male carpenter bee do not have stingers but the female does. Carpenter bees don’t pose a threat but they can damage wood when they are building their nest.

Yellow Jacket, Baldfaced Hornet, European Hornet and Paper Wasp
Yellow jackets are not a bee but in fact a wasp. They are considered beneficial due to the number of insects they eat but they can become a problem especially when they build such large colonies of up to 30,000 in a nest. Nesting sites can be found in the ground, an attic or eaves of a building. Yellow jackets will sting repeatedly.
Paper wasps get their name from the umbrella like shape and paper material they build their nests from which is usually found in eaves or another protected location. They are not as aggressive as yellow jackets or hornets but they do have a painful sting.
Baldfaced hornets and European hornets also build paper nests and tend to locate their nests in trees, on the side of buildings, underground or hollow trees depending on the species. The European hornet can be active at night as well as daytime. They are extremely aggressive and can sting repeatedly.
All of the above are considered social wasps. They behave in a similar behavior whereby the male and queen of a colony are produced in late summer, they mate and the fertilized queen overwinters in a protected site. Come spring she will choose a nesting site and builds a paper nest. Her eggs are then laid in the cells of the nest. The sting of each of these varies but each are equally painful.
