What are Beetles?

Beetles are the largest and most diverse variety of insects on the planet.

Beetles fall into two different categories, there are structural beetles such as powderpost beetles and non-structural beetles such as carpet beetles or grain beetles. Powderpost beetles lay eggs on the surface of the wood. When the eggs hatch the larvae bore into the wood and eat the soft grain of the wood. Upon exiting they leave a pinhole with evidence of a frass. This can compromise the structural integrity of your home.

Why do I have beetles?

You may have a type of wood that is in the structure of your home that is attractive to wood destroying beetles or conditions which are conducive to their habitat requirements.

Getting rid of beetles in your home or structure

In order to get rid of any powderpost beetles you really need a professional treatment. When the powderpost beetles leave their hole, the process starts all over again. A professional like Four Seasons | HomeTown Pest Control can take care of this quickly for you.

What can I do in the future to prevent beetles?

Unless your home has had a wood destroying insect treatment this really is the only option. Trying to self-treat is highly inadvisable. Powderpost beetles are only active during certain times of the year, so it’s important to get with someone like us to protect your home. They can be as destructive as termites.

In relation to other beetles that fall into the non-structural pest category, these can all be taken care of under our maintenance plan.
