Mice

Mice (Mus musculus):

What do Mice Look Like?

  • Size: Mice are small rodents, typically measuring about 2.5 to 3.75 inches in length (excluding the tail). Their tails add 2.75 to 4 inches to their total length. Adult house mice generally weigh between 0.5 to 1 ounce.
  • Color: Mice typically have brown or gray fur, although coloration can vary depending on the species and individual. Their underbelly is usually lighter in color than their backs.
  • Habitat: Mice are highly adaptable and can inhabit various environments, including urban areas, farmland, and buildings. They seek shelter indoors, often nesting in wall voids, attics, basements, and crawl spaces. They are nocturnal and secretive, coming out to forage for food and water at night.
  • Behavior: Mice enter your house through small openings and climb various surfaces. They are omnivorous scavengers, feeding on grains, seeds, fruits, insects, and even small amounts of meat. Mice reproduce rapidly, with females capable of producing several litters per year.
  • Health Concerns: Mice can spread diseases to humans through direct contact, bites, or by contaminating food and surfaces with their urine, droppings, or saliva. Diseases associated with mice include salmonellosis, hantavirus, leptospirosis, and lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV). Allergic reactions to mouse allergens can also trigger asthma symptoms in sensitive individuals.

How to get rid of Mice

  • Identify the signs of mouse activity, such as droppings, gnaw marks, nests, and unusual noises (scratching or squeaking sounds).
  • Seal all cracks, gaps, and openings around your home's exterior, including foundation vents, utility penetrations, and gaps around doors and windows.
  • Keep your home clean and free of food crumbs, spills, and clutter.  Store food in airtight containers, and avoid leaving pet food out overnight.  Dispose of garbage regularly and use secure trash bins with tight-fitting lids.
  • If you have a persistent or large-scale mouse infestation, consider hiring a licensed pest control professional.
